Recognizing When Your Tree Has to Go Before the Holidays

As much as you love your trees, there are times when they’ll need to be removed. This is especially true if the tree is becoming a hazard that could damage you, your property, or your other trees. With the holidays approaching, you’ll want to have any dangerous trees taken care of before the rush. We can become quite busy as people get their property ready for the upcoming celebrations. The following are signs that may indicate that a tree needs to be removed:

Decaying or Dying

It’s normal for a tree to drop small branches, especially during a storm. On the other hand, if your tree is losing large branches without high winds, it could be due to an underlying issue. As a tree begins to decay or die, the branches weaken.

Look for fungi or mushrooms growing on the tree. They feed off of dead wood. Nesting animals love it as well, especially as the temperature drops.

Leaning

Some trees naturally lean. This isn’t a problem, but if your tree suddenly tilts to the side, this needs to be evaluated. If you see your tree leans, has hanging branches, or there are cracks in the trunk, it’s best to have a professional look at it. You don’t want your holidays interrupted by a tree that’s falling over.

Infestation

Trees that are completely infested typically need to be removed. Several tree-borer insects can cause significant damage, which makes the tree a hazard.

Fortunately, not all trees with infestations have to be removed. If the problem is caught early enough, the tree might be saved. This depends heavily on the type of tree it is and what kind of pests have invaded it.

Disease

Your trees are subject to a variety of diseases. Some are capable of causing extreme damage and even killing the tree. If your tree is diseased and can’t be cured, it’s best to remove it.

Dangerous Location

Sometimes, a tree has to be removed due to its location. You normally wouldn’t take down a healthy one, but if it’s too close to your house or power lines, it may be in your best interest. A severe storm could cause limbs to come down, which could knock out the power or damage your home. You don’t want this to ruin your holidays.

These signs don’t always mean that a tree has to be removed. We can evaluate any trees you are worried about and help you find the best course of action. Regardless of the outcome, you’ll have peace of mind and be able to enjoy a worry-free holiday season.
